BOOK TALKS
This year, you will have the amazing opportunity to present monthly Book Talks to our class! Book Talks are a way for you to share your excitement about a book you read during the month, practice your presentation skills, and recommend books to classmates. You may choose from one of the suggested titles, or pick your own. Choose a book that is challenging for you. To become wide readers, you are to read from a different genre each month.
INSTRUCTIONS
You may write down notes or present from memory, but your book talks should be practiced and prepared. You will have approximately 3 minutes to present.
1. You should be sure to prepare your book talk at home. Your book needs to be finished by the time of your Book Talk presentation. Keep in mind when your due date is! This should be the book you are reading each night as part of your homework.
2. You should choose a book you love and want to tell your classmates about! You will be talking about the book as if you’re selling it on a commercial.
3. You should share an overview of the book. The overview should include:
● A detailed summary of the book-- showing you understood what you read, in your own words
● Important details about characters or topic
● The problem and how the characters respond/learned or other important/interesting details
4. When presenting, be sure to make eye-contact with the class, even if choosing to read notes from a card or sheet. Make sure to use appropriate expression, volume, and fluency.
5. When presenting, think of ways to engage your audience—how can you make them want to read your book? Make it interesting!
You will be graded on your preparation and presentation. On the day of your Book Talk, your teacher will give you a rubric to fill out with your feedback on the presentation, and return it to you with her feedback. You will need to be prepared to tell your teacher the next month’s genre and book title. Good luck, and have FUN
